When looking back at past accomplishments for Kremlin-Hillsdale and our Academic Teams, it is remarkable to note the success of our program. From the beginning of the creation of academic bowl competitions by the OSSAA, KHS has been to state twenty times. Kremlin-Hillsdale has achieved two High School State Championships in 1997 and in 2002. We have also been the Runners-up four times, third place finishers five times, and had five fourth place finishes. Outside of the state competitions, KHS has also competed in the National Academic Championship nine times, with the highest finish of 32nd in the nation in 2018. Kremlin-Hillsdale has had seventeen Academic Bowl All-Staters to-date and counting.
Beginning in 1998, the junior high began state competitions. Since that time, KHS has had thirty-nine teams qualify for State (including two this year). The junior high has won seven State Championships.
Programs like this aren't just built overnight. Just like anything, any successful program has to have a mastermind. Roger Gossen, a fity year educator, has been the academic coach at Kremlin-Hillsdale since 1986. This year was Mr. Gossen's twentieth appearance at State. Mr. Gossen is a two-time state champion coach (1997,2002).
The junior high team has been coached by Mr. Ryan Johnson since 2023. Mr. Johnson is a graduate from Kremlin-Hillsdale. As a student, Mr. Johnson was a member of three JH State Championship teams, and in high school he was on teams that were the State Runner-up twice, and on another team that got fourth. Mr. Johnson also competed twice in the National Academic Championships.
This year, all three of our Kremlin-Hillsdale teams qualified for State. All of these teams are comprised of gifted, bright, and dedicated students that help establish "The Bronc Way" at Kremlin-Hillsdale. We praise these teams and their coaches for their hard work, grit, and dedication to the success of the KHS Academic Teams.
